Week 1: Purpose
Welcome to your course! This week Amanda introduces herself and her company. We take a deep dive into defining your "why" and describing your purpose. We look at the difference between a small business and a start-up and how to avoid these common rookie mistakes.
Week 2: Place
Amanda explains why as a business owner you need to define your unique expertise that makes you the right person to create this business. Together we craft a narrative about how you are different from your competition. Finally, we dive into a lesson on understanding and identifying the difference between similar and adjacent brands.
Week 3: People
It all starts with understanding who is (and isn’t) your customer. We start with the idea, figure out the competitive landscape, then figure out who you’re selling to. This is your guide on how to focus on behaviors, not demographics. We wrap up with a bonus lesson on how to do scrappy customer research.
Week 4: Promise
This week is all about what you are selling– and how you may want to expand in the future. This is the fun part! In this segment, Amanda makes the argument for why you should bake company values into your business from day one. We also cover your brand and brand identity.
Week 5: Pricing
How to get your customers to actually pay you. And, how to be realistic about your expenses and budget. Amanda covers her pricing philosophy, cash flow 101, important bookkeeping skills, and why bartering is BS.
Week 6: Promotion
This week is about promotion and launch. Our guest speaker, a digital marketing consultant, shares his top techniques. We explore different channels for marketing and promotion and give a guide on how to build an email list and maximize your social media presence.
Week 7: PANIC
Panic is normal. This week were are going to work through it. We discuss the ups and downs and how to handle them. In this segment, Amanda talks co-founders, designing your ideal life, dealing with life, and leadership.
Week 8: The Plan
In our final week, we hammer out your business pitch. We want to hear the story of what you’re offering, who your customer is, why you’re the one to build it, the shortest version of your founder story, and where you’re headed next. Our special guest shares insight on small business management tips, and we wrap up by reviewing your business plan.
